“The Michigan 4-H Youth Conservation Council (M4-HYCC) provided me with a strong foundation that engaged and continued to pique my interest in environmental conservation; enhanced my leadership and professional skills; and exposed me to an array of environmental thought leaders. I found that M4-HYCC's unique structure enables youth to learn about environmental research and advocacy through peer interaction while they are guided by a network of adult mentors. Youth are encouraged to take full ownership of their M4-HYCC projects, and they achieve leadership as they grow in experience. Following my work with M4-HYCC, I applied these skills directly through my career and studies: I completed conservation-related legislative analyses as an intern for the Michigan State Senate; coordinated environmental education initiatives as an employee of the State of Michigan's environmental quality regulatory agency; and earned an environmental policy specialization from Michigan State University. Currently, I am working on performance measurement of greenhouse gas mitigation and adaptation in the municipal government sector, and I remain actively involved in environmental research and advocacy.” Olivia Cohn, former M4-HYCC member RETURN TO HOMEPAGE |
